"No matter what it is, everything essentially has an expiration date. All things return to whence they came. Even if it takes years and years for say... plastic to degrade, it still will eventually. What they didn't tell you, of course, is that this also applies to the very fabric of our reality."
It started out small, like........ real small. Like a single blue ant marching along with the rest of its colony, or all the blades of grass in a yard suddenly being curly. Odd and unexplained occurrences, yes, but nothing that didn't really seem impossible. But then there was suddenly another star in the sky that we hadn't seen before, a forest of trees miraculously growing clear leaves, a literal flying pig.
And then the moon turned pink
it also exploded.
At that point, it was just a bit hard for governments to cover this up any longer than they already had.
And thus began the era of the Rift, the final chapter of existence as we know it.
It was pretty easy to tell that reality itself was on its last legs when suddenly a long ruined castle was back in pristine condition and those who lived within it now roamed once again years in the future. Time itself has become skewed, leading parts of the world to revert to its old state however many years back the Rift feels like going. Maybe it's just a construction team that finishes a building only for it to warp back to when it was an empty plot right after. Or perhaps it's an entire dinosaur skeleton regaining its flesh and completely destroying a museum in the process.
Then, of course, there’s the effects it has on people.
It happens randomly, a sudden unexplainable mutation within a person. There wasn’t much change at first, a spontaneously new eye color, a sudden odd birthmark, a strand of completely different hair. Soon enough though, it was more than just cosmetic differences. Someone would wake up to find themselves not needing their glasses anymore or proficiency in an instrument they had never even touched. These people all changed by the rift in existence, the decay reaching, and warping them in odd ways.
Then there were the ones who went just a bit beyond miracles.
Powers straight out of comics and movies; abilities beyond anything anyone had ever seen. Some could summon a bolt of lightning at the drop of the hat, while others could effectively erase memories straight from your head.
It was amazing, exciting, and extremely dangerous.
These Warps happening at random and to literally anyone on the face of the earth, powers falling easily into the wrong hands. And frankly, there isn't much a gun can do against someone who can raise the dead.
So a precedent was set; each government began putting together their own task forces of Warped in an effort to combat not only the people who used their abilities for their own personal gain but to help keep the effects of the rift in check. When another piece of time becomes stitched together, they're the ones sent out to explain the situation to those ripped from their time periods. When a creature of otherworldly proportions appears and begins destroying everything in sight, they're the ones who fight it off.
And this is where your character finds themselves.
Before, the agency here only had a small handful of members at a time, but due to the increased activity of the rift, it began to get unmanageable even for them.
So a call was sent out.
Some of you may have only received an innocent email, a simple job scout for a random field you'd find yourself astute in with quite the decent pay.
Other's... well maybe you had to have a little more convincing before agreeing to come.
But in the end, you've all found yourself in the same odd sky rise in the middle of a city.
